This week, I took some time off for the holidays, but it hasn’t exactly been restful. Between holiday activities, spending time with family, and keeping up with regular responsibilities, it’s felt like a non-stop marathon.

It’s Saturday now, and I’ve decided to make today about doing absolutely nothing. As I write this, I’m watching the Chargers play the Patriots. They’re currently up by 13 points, and if they win, they’re in the playoffs. Needless to say, my mood is pretty great.

But this post isn’t just about football or holiday chaos—it’s a reminder about the importance of setting time aside for yourself.

The Importance of Rest During the Holidays

The holiday season is packed with commitments. From family gatherings to end-of-year responsibilities, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind and forget to take care of yourself. But here’s the thing: if you don’t recharge, you can’t give your best to your loved ones or yourself.

Today, my wife, daughter, and I are hitting pause. We’re vegging out on the couch, watching movies, and just relaxing. We’ve turned down a few events to make sure we have this time together—and honestly, it feels like the right decision.

Lesson Learned: Prioritize Recharge Time

Taking a day to unwind doesn’t mean you’re lazy or uncommitted—it means you’re smart about your energy. Here’s what I’ve taken away this week:

  1. Say No When You Need To: You can’t do everything, and that’s okay. Turning down commitments can create space for the rest you desperately need.
  2. Recognize the Signs of Burnout: Feeling drained? Stretched too thin? These are cues to slow down and refocus.
  3. Be Present When You Recharge: Whether it’s watching football, movies, or simply doing nothing, fully commit to the downtime.

Looking Ahead

As we move into the new year, I’m going to make it a point to prioritize rest and recharge time—not just for the holidays but as a regular part of my routine. Life is busy, but it’s important to step back, refuel, and be ready to give your best to the things and people that matter most.

What do you do to recharge during hectic times? Share your tips—I could definitely use more ideas.

Until next time,
